ROUTINE MEDICAL DRUG SCREENS

Routine medical drug of abuse screens are performed six times per week.  Order test on the RML red and white Test Request.  Chain of custody will be performed if collected at our collection site and GC/MS confirmation of positive results will be performed.

SPECIMEN REQUIRED:
Random urine sample (20 ml minimum).

DRUGS DETECTED:
Amphetamines (as a group), Cocaine, THC (Marijuana), Opiates (as a group), Phencyclidine.

ORDER TEST AS:
Drug Screen I.

EMERGENCY DRUG SCREENS

Emergency drug screens are performed on a STAT basis at our hospital-based Immediate Response Laboratory for hospital accounts and Emergency Department patients only.

SPECIMEN REQUIRED:
Random urine sample (minimum volume 20 ml).

DRUGS DETECTED:
Phencyclidine, Benzodiazepams (as a group), Cocaine, Amphetamines (as a group), THC (Marijuana), Opiates (as a group, Barbiturates (as a group) and Tricycline Antidepressants (as a group).

ORDERING INFORMATION:
Order as Drug Screen, Med.

NOTES:

  1. Chain of custody documentation is not performed with this drug screen profile.
  2. Test results are not confirmed by GC/MS testing.

 

OCCUPATIONAL/FORENSIC PERSONNEL DRUG SCREENING

SCREENING PROCEDURES (QUALITATIVE):
Immunoassay.

CONFIRMATION PROCEDURES:
GC/MS.

SPECIMEN REQUIRED:
30 ml random urine specimen.  Individual security specimen container provided.

SPECIMEN RETENTION:
Negative - Specimen held two (2) weeks from date of report.
Positive - Specimen held one year from date of report; frozen.

CHAIN OF CUSTODY SERVICE:
Special chain of custody form with tamper-proof packaging for either an RML courier pickup or with RML prepaid postage mailers.

COLLECTION SITES:

  1. RML Central Laboratory.  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday; 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Saturday.
  2. Oakridge Office site.  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
  3. Brookside site.  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

ASSAY SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Amphetamine
    • Assay Specifications: Amphetamine (Benzedrine, Dexedrine), Methamphetamine (Desoxyn).  Positive cut off equals 1,000 ng/ml
  • THC (Marijuana)
    • Assay Specifications: Major urinary metabolites of  9-Tetrahydrocannabinol.  Positive cut off equals 50 ng/ml.
  • Cocaine metabolite
    • Assay Specifications: Benzoylecgonine.  Positive cut off equals 300 ng/ml.
  • Opiate
    • Assay Specifications: Morphine, Morphine-3-glucuronide, Codeine, Hydromorphone, Hydrocodone, Levorphanol, Oxycodone.  Positive cut off equals 2,000 ng/ml.
  • PCP (Phencyclidine)
    • Assay Specifications: Phencyclidine (PCP), 1-[1-(2-Thienyl)-cyclohexyl]piperidine (TCP).  Positive cut off equals 25 ng/ml.

 

DRUG TESTING INFORMATION

TEST:

  • Alcohol
    • Sample Stability: One week refrigerated (stored in small tube capped tightly)
    • Days Detectable After Use:
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: GLC
  • THC (Marijuana)
    • Sample Stability: Urine specimen should be stored at 2-8ÂșC. Deliver within 72 hours.
    • Days Detectable After Use: Excretion of metabolites occur within hours after exposure and levels may be detectable for many days after smoking.
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: GC/MS
  • Cocaine
    • Sample Stability: One week refrigerated (longer if frozen)
    • Days Detectable After Use: 24-72 hours
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: GC/MS
  • Amphetamines
    • Sample Stability: One week refrigerated (longer if frozen)
    • Days Detectable After Use: 1-2 days
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: Some non-prescription medications may interfere with GC/MS confirmation.
  • Opiates
    • Sample Stability: One week refrigerated (longer if frozen)
    • Days Detectable After Use: 1-2 days
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: GC/MS
  • PCP (Phencyclidine) 
    • Sample Stability: One week refrigerated (longer if frozen)
    • Days Detectable After Use: 2-8 days
    • Recommended Confirmation Testing: GC/MS

 

CHAIN OF CUSTODY PROTOCOL

Chain of custody forms and instructions are provided with occupational drug collection kits.  Order on RML Supply Requisition.  Instructions for proper collection and chain of custody protocol are listed on the back of the custody control form.
